As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us spend more time thinking about what we are thankful for. Foremost on this list is usually family, and those who raised and supported us throughout our lives. If you are planning to host aging parents or any of your older adult family members this holiday, be sure to keep the following in mind:

  • Consider seating arrangements: If your aging guests have struggles with mobility, try to sit them at the end of the table. This helps them to sit or get up without worrying about disturbing their neighbors, and helps give ample room for their table setting.
  • Plan in advance for dietary requirements: Consult with your loved one's medical provider to see if they currently have any dietary restrictions and plan the menu accordingly. For example, if a family member is suffering from diabetes, it is important to serve foods that are low salt, low sugar or low fat.
  • Review the floor plan: Make sure that clutter in hallways or narrow spaces is put away, and that carpets are properly secured. If there is a need for the older adult to travel upstairs, be sure to offer assistance.

While we enjoy our family's company this Thanksgiving, it is also important to give thanks to the caregivers who support our loved ones. Their tireless efforts help ensure the safety and wellbeing of their care recipients, which is often more difficult if the older adult has decided to pursue aging in place.

This holiday season, consider giving the caregivers you are thankful for a gift that adds value to every member involved in the care circle. Independa's Angela™ software interface plays a key role in supporting independent living for seniors, and provides the support caregivers need.

The caregiver web application was designed with professional caregivers in mind, helping to provide peace-of-mind with smart reminders for events, medications and check-ins, as well as integrated alerts and thresholds associated with wireless health devices and home sensors.
