American adults are living longer and healthier lives than they ever have before. As a result, many are choosing to spend their senior years not in an assisted living facility but in the comfort of their own homes. A new study released by Philips and the Social Enterprise Initiative (GSEI) at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business found that 91 percent of Baby Boomers plan to age in place

While it's really no surprise that individuals would want to stay in an environment that is familiar and comfortable, the survey also uncovered a finding that would make aging in place for most of the respondents very difficult. Of the individuals who said that they anticipated staying at home, only 21 percent said that they planned to incorporate technological solutions to help them maintain their quality of life.

The most common reason cited against adding more technology into the home was perceived cost. A sizable number also said that they weren't sure how devices and software would improve their well-being as they aged.

In the report, Brent Shafer, CEO of Philips North America, said that the results of the survey present an opportunity to educate older adults about the merits of technological advances.

"The projected growth of the aging population constitutes a real need to focus on preparing for the future today," Shafer said. "Now is the time that we need to urgently and collectively shift focus to reduce the barriers and increase education on new innovations in technology that bring peace of mind, safety, and convenience to aging seniors."

Individuals who are advanced in age said that they are willing to invest in new technology for tasks that they do often, including:

  • Accessing government services
  • Connecting with healthcare providers
  • Refilling prescriptions.
