According to the market research firm The Freedonia Group, eldercare costs will reach close to $320 billion in the United States by 2016. For caregivers, these costs are not only financial, but physical and emotional as well. After spending eight hours in an office, a large number of individuals come home to a sick or aging loved one who needs their undivided attention and care. Most people in this situation would embrace any solution that would simplify their lives.

The technology industry targeting older adults is quickly growing, and many different products abound. Those responsible for the care of older adults may be concerned about the costs of various items, but according to technology consultant Michael Wolf, they should focus on the long-term benefits.

"By embracing preventative and live-in-place technologies enabled through the [Internet of Things], the elderly and their loved ones can take more control of their own health and well-being in the long-term," Wolf wrote. "In short, by keeping them out of the healthcare and expensive caregiver market longer, they'll have more years and more money down the line."

Wolf also noted that as this industry grows and receives more investment, technology for seniors will become more affordable. The idea of older adults embracing software solutions will no longer be a novelty, but just another component of comprehensive care.
