Addressing older adult needs from the ground up

As the Baby Boomer generation approaches retirement age, the needs of older adults in America have taken a heightened priority on the national stage. Legislators, industry leaders, care managers and other professionals have realized that they must adapt their practices to better appeal to and accommodate this growing portion of the population. And when it comes to assisted living communities and other facilities geared toward older adults, that means incorporating new eldercare innovations from the ground up.

Recently, the eldercare media outlet Senior Housing News reported on a range of new development projects that are intended to house older adults with varying degrees of ability. Featuring independent living and assisted living residences, new continuing care retirement community Fountainview at Gonda Westside is currently underway in the Los Angeles area. Local architecture firm Gensler will reportedly be constructing the facility to promote social engagement among residents, while suites intended for independent living and assisted living will be expressly designed to address the unique needs of their residents.

Meanwhile, sources report that Waters Senior Living in Minnesota has enlisted developers to construct a cutting-edge new community in Mayowood that will span 276,000 square feet across six acres of land. The project, like Fountainview, is also being built with a distinct regard for the diversity within the older adult population.

The development, named The Waters on Mayowood, will contain "a four-story assisted living wing with 70 units and six units of 'enhanced care suites' [and…] a four-story independent living wing with 71 units, as well as a two-story memory care wing featuring 28 units," PostBulletin reports.
