Addressing the challenges of aging in place

As the American elderly population swells to unprecedented proportions, the needs of these individuals will undoubtedly place a greater financial strain on family members, assisted living communities and government entities. Thankfully, though, one method of addressing this issue – allowing those past retirement to age in place – is also widely preferred among this group.

According to a New York University (NYU) report entitled “Aging Alone in America,” which was presented to the Council on Contemporary Families for Older Americans in May 2012, more of these individuals are living on their own than ever before, and many prefer it that way.

But, at-home elderly care is not without its challenges. While this practice may work well for those who don’t have medical conditions to contend with, what about older people who require more constant care? Family members may also be apprehensive about leaving their loved ones unattended should such issues develop.

Last month, we discussed another looming issue that faces elderly citizens who wish to age in place: social isolation.

“Deteriorating mental or physical health may limit a person’s ability participate in social interactions outside the home,” writes report author and NYU Professor Eric Klinenberg. “Having no children, or living far away from them, especially increases the risk of social isolation.”
