Today’s aging population overwhelmingly desires to age in their own homes and remain independent as long as possible. However, the short supply of affordable housing for older adults that can support the activities of daily living means that many will need to improve their existing homes to fit their needs.

As we age, many everyday tasks can become more difficult, especially as mobility and balance decreases. This often requires special considerations in home design, aimed at supporting the needs of older adults and remove possible sources of frustration. The Houston Chronicle recently published a list of affordable improvements that do not require a full remodel that were suggested by the Remodelers Council of the Greater Houston Builders Association.

  • Lever handles: Lever handles are not only stylish and attractive, but they are also easier to operate than traditional “twist” models. Bathroom and kitchen faucets should be replaced with lever handles, as well as interior and exterior doors.
  • Hand-held shower baton: The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the home to address while preparing for aging in place. A handheld shower is both more efficient, and can help reduce the need for bending and stretching. The source suggests purchasing a model with a “trickle control” for greater efficiency. These models generally run under $100.
  • Grab bars: Installing grab bars inside of the shower is another means of reducing the likelihood of a slip and fall. Generally available for under $60, these additions are a cost-effective means of increasing care recipient confidence and supporting the decision to age in place. Attractive stainless-steel models are available, as well as a variety of different colors to match your bathroom.
  • Non-slip mats: Place these mats in front of the sink, shower and toilet, or any other areas where there is a chance spilled water may accumulate and cause a fall.
  • Swing hinges: Especially important if the care recipient uses a walker or other mobility device, swing hinges allow greater clearance without widening the doorway. These are crucial for older homes with narrow doorways.
  • Night lights: As vision fades with age, midnight trips to the bathroom carry increased risks. Installing night lights in hallways and bathrooms can help to prevent slips and falls.
