Residential communities across the United States will celebrate National Senior Citizens Day tomorrow, August 21, in commemoration of the vibrant lives our elders lead and contributions they still make to our own. The holiday was instituted by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, and every year since has served to remind everyone of this incredible group of citizens.
Older Americans will enjoy a number of celebrations tomorrow, and below we've highlighted just a few events from around the country.
- Brownwood, Texas: On August 21, residents of this Lone Star State town and the surrounding area will be able to visit Care Nursing and Rehab to participate in the CarFit program, which teaches older adults about changing their driving strategies and matching the "fit" of their cars to their driving style. This program helps residents retain their independence as they age in place.
- Delray Beach, Florida: The Senior Citizen Fair, scheduled to take place all day on August 21 at the Grand Villa of Delray East, will allow attendees to receive free medical screenings, shop at a number of fashion booths and enjoy the musical stylings of Ed Slater during a cocktail hour at 4 p.m.
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: In Rittenhouse Park on Thursday, August 15, some of the eldest members of the Society Hill Dance Academy, ranging from 67 to 82 years old, staged a surprise swing dance performance. You can view the video of this heartwarming event here. It's a powerful reminder of how active and joyous members of this community are.
Independa's powerful eldercare technology allows older adults everywhere to remain as independent and engaged as the Society Hill Dance Academy members who danced their way around Rittenhouse Park last week.
