Mary Jean Abfalter and her husband Lawrence used to live in the countryside of Duelm, Minnesota, until two years ago when Lawrence's persistent memory issues began to present a problem for life out there. The pair moved to St. Cloud, close to the Whitney Senior Center, where they have since been able to enjoy aging in place while taking advantage of the facility's opportunities to continue living lives as healthy and independently as possible.
That's all according to the facility's mission statement, which seeks to offer older adults a chance to maintain their independence and overall health while aging in place. In Abfalter's case, this involves participating in tai chi and fitness classes, that not only evaluate important health factors like nutrition and blood pressure, but also give her an outlet to stay active, positive and sociable. Activities like these also offer fun and proactive ways of teaching older adults how to best strengthen themselves, averting the risk of falls.
"It's really about getting in the driver's seat," Laura Hood, the center's Aging Services Director, tells the news source. "The whole message is empowerment and having a good quality of life."
Aging in place is becoming an increasingly popular decision, and is bolstered by organizations such as the St. Cloud Whitney Senior Center.
