In-home eldercare costs stay stable as assisted living expenses soar

Just as a larger population than ever before is beginning to evaluate their options for quality eldercare, a new survey conducted by Genworth Financial Inc – an international insurance provider – has revealed that the cost of assisted living has increased for the 10th consecutive year.

In a company press release, Pat Foley, president of distribution and marketing at Genworth, explained that “there are many factors that go into rising care costs, from the number of available skilled professionals to real estate prices.”

Genworth has conducted its Cost Care Survey annually for the last decade, and in that time, the yearly expenses of privately owned assisted living communities have reportedly surged from $65,200 to $83,950.

The cost of in-home eldercare, meanwhile, has remained relatively stable according to the survey. This, paired with the fact that – based on AARP figures – up to 90 percent of those past retirement age would prefer to age in place, indicates that care managers must expand into this attractive and cost-effective field to remain competitive in the coming years.
