New app gives hearing aid users discreet control

One of the major challenges in providing older adults with the tools to help them remain independent and safe is avoiding making the user feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately, many older adults feel that there is a stigma involved with admitting their challenges with the activities of daily living. They simply do not want to be perceived or treated any differently because of physical limitations.

Faced with an aging population, developers have been trying to provide older adults with the non-stigmatizing tools that they need to successfully pursue aging in place. One of the most recent developments is a hearing aid that syncs with a user's smartphone, and allows them to discreetly manage their volume.

In recent years, an increasing number of consumers can be found with bluetooth-enabled devices in their ears that allow them hands-free operation of their cellular device. Now, Glenview-based Beltone is capitalizing on this trend by offering the aging Baby Boomer generation a similar solution for their hearing aids.

"It's a cosmetic thing. Some people don't want to be seen with a hearing aid," Dr. Shiva Mathura, a family medicine physician at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial told The Daytona News-Journal. "They try to find ways to get through their day without any assistance of a hearing aid. I see that a lot."

Independa understands older adults' desire for independent living aids that do not make the user feel ostracized. That is why our Angela™ caregiving solution can be accessed through the LG Television.
