New Chinese policy prioritizes social connectivity for older adults

Though countries across the globe are feeling the effects of a substantial demographic shift as the Baby Boomer generation ages, government officials in the most populous nations are particularly apprehensive about the challenges to come. Recently, news broke that the Chinese government had introduced a policy requiring citizens to visit their parents, grandparents and other relatives regularly, in part as a bid to protect older adults from the myriad complications linked to social isolation.

According to China Daily, "the law was passed to protect the lawful rights and interests of parents aged 60 and older, and to carry on the Chinese virtue of filial piety."

The legislation also asserts that "family members should care about the psychological needs of their older relatives, and should visit them or send greetings on a regular basis."

The new law, which took effect at the beginning of July, enables older adults to take legal action if their younger relatives to do not provide adequate support in the form of regular contact. However, some skeptics have voiced concerns about whether the measure is enforceable, particularly because it does not stipulate exact visitation requirements.

What care managers can take away from this new law

The success of the law remains to be seen, however it does indicate that Chinese officials have recognized the vital role that social engagement plays in long-term health. Research has indicated that social isolation – a widespread concern for older adults – can exacerbate cognitive and physical ailments and is a risk factor for overall functional decline.

Because of the detrimental impact social isolation can have on the quality of life older adults enjoy, Independa's caregiving support technology has been specifically developed to promote engagement and connectivity among this community.
