New study tackles issue of pressure ulcers among older adults

Older adults who experience restricted mobility because of arthritis or some other age-related condition have many unique concerns to contend with, and often require a greater degree of assistance and attention than their peers. One common risk faced by this population is a painful condition caused by placing consistent pressure on a specific area of the skin. This can result in pressure ulcers that can easily become infected and may substantially impair an individual's quality of life.

Though care managers are not charged with providing medical care for their recipients, it may be beneficial to make suggestions regarding lifestyle habits that can reduce the likelihood of this condition. Previously on this blog, we reported on a study emphasizing the importance of regular exercise, particularly for older adults with arthritis. Senior living communities that offer exercises classes targeted toward residents with this issue, for example, may ultimately help keep these individuals at the same level of care for longer periods.

Now, researchers from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston have revealed that introducing high-density foam mattresses may help offset the risk of developing pressure ulcers when lying in one place. This could potentially replace the technique of helping care recipients turn over regularly, which is employed in some care communities.

"We hope using high-density foam mattresses and being very much aware of resident's skin at every turn will decrease the necessity of turning residents every two hours to prevent pressure ulcers and allow residents to sleep more, improving quality of life," said lead investigator Nancy Bergstrom, Ph.D., in a press release on the new report.

As the Baby Boomer generation ages, it is all the more crucial for eldercare professionals to explore new and more efficient avenues to improve the quality of care they can provide. At Independa, our top priority is ensuring that older adults who reside in senior living communities or wish to age in place can do so while benefiting from the continual support of caregivers and enjoying a regular connection with loved ones.
