Older Adult Mental Health and Coping During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on older adults, particularly concerning their mental health. Understanding the challenges and coping mechanisms they employed is crucial for providing better support. Here are the key highlights of our survey results on older adult mental health:

  • Increased Vulnerability: Older adults were particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic, facing significant mental health challenges due to isolation, fear of infection, and disruptions to their daily routines.
  • Coping Strategies: The study identified various coping strategies used by older adults, including maintaining social connections through phone calls and virtual meetings, engaging in physical activities like walking, and adopting a positive outlook to manage stress.
  • Resilience and Adaptation: Despite the challenges, many older adults demonstrated resilience and adaptability by utilizing previous life experiences and learning new skills, such as using technology to stay connected with loved ones.
