Modern technology companies have found success in the past through marketing their products to digitally savvy youth, but these organizations will soon be missing out on a growing demographic with a healthy appetite for new technology: older adults. In a recent conversation with the Huffington Post, the executive director of The Global Coalition on Aging, Michael Hodin, called the older generation "the next frontier" for tech products.
Over 10,000 Americans are turning 65 every day, and the country will soon boast more citizens over 60 than under 16, Hodin explained. Combined with an overwhelming desire to age in place, modern technology companies face an expanding market that has largely been overlooked by product developers.
"By 2032, the over-50 crowd will spend $13.2 trillion annually, one-half of of the U.S. GDP," Hodin explained.
Technology has the potential to revolutionize the lifestyle of older adults and support both the mental and physical well-being of this population. Some of the main concerns of aging in place, such as social isolation and effective monitoring, can be addressed by advances in innovative caregiving that are already available.
