Many Americans — and even a few care managers — still operate under assumption that older adults are adverse to new technology. This is a widely held misconception that has endured from one generation to the next, and has even led to skepticism about the benefits of telecare. However, this belief could well be shattered by a new poll from Pew research that reveals a staggering rise in the use of social media platforms among older adults.
According to findings from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, approximately 72 percent of adult Americans use some form of social media.
"One of the more striking stories about the social networking population has been the growth among older internet users in recent years. Those ages 65 and older have roughly tripled their presence on social networking sites in the last four years — from 13 percent in the spring of 2009 to 43 percent now," an overview of the study states.
Assuming that older adults can't or won't adapt to new communication platforms or other technological advancements is one of the most common mistakes that residential facilities make today. Previously on this blog, we've documented the benefits of web-based social connectivity for older adults, and the role that social media can play in combating social isolation. The recent findings from Pew make it clear that older care recipients are not only able, but eager to embrace the power of Facebook, Twitter and other platforms to stay in touch with their loved ones.
Embracing social connectivity with Independa
Research has shown that social isolation — a common concern for older adults whether they choose to age in place or stay in a residential community — can exacerbate medical conditions and increase the rate of physical and cognitive decline. A recent French study also highlighted the importance of remaining socially and mentally engaged as a means of reducing dementia risk.
