Over 10,000 Americans are turning 65 everyday, and according to the PEW Research Center this trend will continue for the next 15 years. Unfortunately, another trend is currently taking place that can significantly affect the wellness of this population. Health conditions brought on by improper diet are increasing, making it important for older adults to understand the benefits of proper nutrition.

According to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon of Washington University, older adults with existing conditions are at the highest risk for undernutrition, which occurs when a person doesn’t receive the proper amount of nutrients from their diet. Studies have shown that about 40 percent of older adults eat less than 75 percent of the recommended daily allowance of nutrients.

This is of particular concern for those pursuing aging in place, according to Dr. Lyon. Limited finances may impact menu options, but social isolation also plays a large role. Older adults aging in place often prepare and enjoy their meals with limited company. This can result in reduced satisfaction from their meals, and easier, but less healthy, meal choices.

The National Institute on Aging has published several resources to help older adults receive proper nutrition. Their resources include menu planning tools, recipe ideas, shopping tips and information on important nutrients that support healthy aging.

Independa also offers older adults a revolutionary means of avoiding the negative effects of social isolation. Independa’s social engagement and caregiving support solution enables a user to remain socially active and engaged, despite challenges of mobility or distance.
