Recent study explores social media usage of older adults

Technological advancements have made it easier than ever to stay in touch with friends and loved ones who are separated by distance or mobility. Most social media sites offer a user-friendly experience that allows anyone to locate and contact missed connections with increasing ease.

In the past, when someone heard the term "social media," they would probably immediately think of pre-teens asking their parents permission to log on. But as the utility of social media sites has continued to develop, they have been adopted by an increasingly wider audience no matter the age or technology adoption.

This is evidenced by recent research from the Pew Research Center, which explores U.S. adults' use of social media on an annual basis. Their latest study published in April revealed that an increasing number of older American adults are joining these online communities.  The research found that 59 percent of "online adults" over the age of 65 are currently using social media, such as Facebook and Skype.
