Valentine's Day can be a romantic and sentimental holiday, providing caregivers and family members the perfect opportunity to give thoughtful gifts. While fresh-cut flowers and boxes of chocolate are mainstays in Valentine's gift-giving, you might want to think outside the box when preparing the perfect present for the care recipient in your life. Rather than investing in gifts that will last a few days, here are some of our favorite ideas for the holiday:

Dance lessons. There are few things more romantic than dancing, from traditional Viennese waltz to the tango. Many dance studios offer classes for people with limited mobility, or specifically designed for students over 65. Giving the gift of a new, fun skill provides physical activity and a lifelong set of moves on the dance floor. Especially for couples, dance lessons can be entertaining and rewarding.

Garden supplies. Give care recipients long-stem roses, and they enjoy flowers for a week. Give them gardening supplies, and they enjoy them all summer long. February is an ideal time to make plans for the warmer months, and stocking up on seeds, bulbs, tools and other gardening supplies can set your loved one up for a floral, festive spring and summer.

Books about love. From collections of essays to romantic novels, books transport readers to romantic settings, no matter what their taste or preference. People who are retired often love to cross books off their must-read list, so giving them a head start can be a great way to say "I love you."

At Independa, our intuitive Angela™ platform allows caregivers and care recipients to connect through the convenience of an LG TV. Our technology supports essential activities of daily living.
