What will 2014 bring for eldercare?

Happy New Year from Independa! At this time, it's customary not just to look back on the advancements and pitfalls of the past year, but to offer projections for the future. With the Baby Boomer generation entering retirement and more than a third of these individuals caring for at least one living parent to boot, 2014 is sure to present some unique challenges for eldercare professionals and adult children, and the time for innovation is now.

Over the course of 2013, we've documented the progression of eldercare initiatives across the country and around the world, from a telecare program launched by the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs to a law in China that would require adult children to pay regular visits to their parents in the spirit of filial piety. Alzheimer's disease has also been a hot topic in the last year, as medical researchers and caregivers alike strive to improve the lives of millions of older adults who struggle with this cognitive decline.

Many of the challenges eldercare professionals and government legislators faced in 2013 will still present obstacles in the year to come, but as we recently reported, it's clear that investors – who often display a sixth-sense when it comes to viable innovation – are backing a particular horse to tackle these dilemmas: Telecare services.

From helping senior living communities distinguish their services in an increasingly competitive marketplace to promoting independent living for older adults who don't yet require full-time care, technological advancements including medical reminders, video chat and remote monitoring capabilities all stand to ease the burden on informal caregivers and professionals while ensuring that the elderly population gets the support it needs.

The New Year has arrived, leading many Senior Providers to reflect on their services and map out a path to improve the quality of their overall care. Is now the time to investigate new avenues of caregiver support? At Independa, we are committed to improving the quality of life for older adults across the country, but our secondary goal is providing caregivers with the backup they need as they work so tirelessly for others. When families, caregivers and care recipients feel respected and supported, the benefits will extend well beyond the eldercare industry itself.

If you have questions about how Independa's innovative telecare services can help Senior Providers ring in the new year, contact us today through our online form. We look forward to supporting your eldercare efforts in 2014!
