Normally, when new technology is imminent, it is the Millennial or younger generations that are the most eager. However, when it comes to the latest advancements in self-driving cars, it is older adults who are filled with anticipation.
The self-driving car concept was first introduced in the 1939 World's Fair, and has captured America's interest for the past 70 years. With the debut of Google's self-driving car, it seems that the wait may soon be over.
Brad Templeton, a consultant who worked with the Google self-driving car team, thinks that "robocars" may see widespread availability by 2020. He also acknowledges that the concept could be the next key development in senior living technology.
"The realities of life just take mobility away from people as they get older," Templeton told The Wall Street Journal. "A solution to that problem is going to be highly welcomed."
As this blog has previously addressed, the rise of older adults deciding to age in place in suburban homes can present a number of challenges. Funding for many of the programs that cater to the transportation needs of older adults have been significantly diminished all together as the result of the recent recession, creating a great need for safe, reliable transit.
"If [a self-driving car] lets you keep your house rather than having to move, I think you'll see people who aren't necessarily early adopters go for it," Tempelton explained.
Of course, successful aging in place requires more than just transportation. Independa's caregiving solutions offer a comprehensive answer to social isolation, the number one issue facing older adults striving to remain independent.
