3 important steps seniors can take to decrease cognitive decline

A new study finds that eating specific foods may slow the rate of cognitive decline among seniors, even when the individual is not at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Over the years, studies have identified a number of additional behaviors that may help seniors ward off cognitive decline. By nurturing both body and mind, seniors may be able to avoid some of the negative impacts of aging.

Eating healthfully

The recent study, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, evaluated cognitive change over almost five years among 960 seniors who adhered to the MIND diet — a hybrid of the Mediterranean and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension plans. Researchers found that seniors who followed the eating plan strictly were about seven years “younger” cognitively than others who did not adhere to the diet.

Engaging in social activities

A 2012 study from Peking University found that “cognitively stimulating social activity” may benefit seniors by helping the brain resist mental diseases like dementia.

Researchers noted that previous studies have analyzed the relationship between social activities or social engagement and seniors’ cognitive abilities. Based on that body of literature, a positive relationship has been established. However, researchers noted that more study is needed.

Exercising the body

The Journal of Aging Research in 2013 conducted a review of the scientific literature regarding the effects of exercise on the negative impacts of aging of the body and mind. Results from many types of studies with both healthy and frail seniors, along with those suffering from mild cognitive decline and dementia, were examined. Researchers noted that exercise stands as a promising, medication-free method for preventing neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline related to aging.
