When some people think about healthy living, unpleasant diet and exercise come to mind. We know what's good for us: vegetables, breaking a sweat, avoiding foods with lots of fat and sugar. However, there are some tools of healthy living that are easier to incorporate.
Red wine. While science about the benefits of red wine has been divided, one element that gets continuous attention is resveratrol. One study in the Journal of Physiology found that regular intake of the compound can deliver many of the same benefits as working out for an hour. However, the benefits plateau after the first glass, so moderation is advisable.
"I think resveratrol could help patient populations who want to exercise but are physically incapable," said Jason Dyck, the principal investigator for the study. "Resveratrol could mimic exercise for them or improve the benefits of the modest amount of exercise that they can do."
Dark chocolate. Like red wine, the antioxidants in chocolate have been found to slow the effects of aging. Lycotec, a British research firm affiliated with Cambridge University, recently rolled out a new dark chocolate bar aimed specifically at helping to promote skin health and other aspects of aging. In a trial, the Huffington Post reports that regular consumption of the chocolate improved blood supply and diminished inflammation. The bar is 70 percent dark chocolate and packs the same antioxidant supply as 100 grams of regular dark chocolate.
Dancing. From aerobics to Zumba, incorporating musical elements in fitness routines can make staying fit fun and exciting. Livestrong cites a FamilyDoctor.org recommendation that people over 65 do 30 minutes of cardio daily, so why not get into the groove?
